Beginning of a New School Year, 2006-2007
Aug. 7th through Aug. 11th--All Kinds of Minds Training based on the work of Dr. Mel Levine. Very interesting, yet overwhelming. J.M. is my case study. I need to make interventions based on this training and track them throughout the year.
Aug. 11th through Aug. 14th--Scottsdale and reading of A Mind at a Time by Dr. Mel Levine. We also visited Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home in Scottsdale, AZ. More inspiration for building new house and going to architecture school.
Aug. 15th through Aug. 18th--I returned to school and attended 2 days of meetings, which left me with two days to prep my classroom for the coming school year. Formal curriculum planning begins.
Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006--Foreign exchange person from MiraCosta College's FLS person arrives in the evening. Ana is 26 yrs. old, married, and four months pregnant. She is a shy and respectful Japanese woman who is leading a group of middle school through high school students on an English learning trip. She stayed until Monday the 28th of Aug.
August 21, 2006--A new school year begins. I feel calmer than the beginning of last year and accomplish more, sooner, in that first week than I had before. We are required to submit lesson plans each week to our new principal. That is a pain in the bottom.
Friday, August 25, 2006-- Appointment with Dr. Sz. He finds my "plumbing" is OK. Also, M and I work like mad to clean house for housewarming party on Saturday the 26th. Trip to CostCo for supplies.
Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006--House warming party is a success. About 60 friends, family and neighbors show up.
Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006--M., her family, and I take Ana to tour "Old Town" San Diego and eat pizza at Filippi's in "Little Italy." I return home and begin planning for the week. M. begins school also tomorrow.
Monday, Aug. 28, 2006--I have an anxious morning. My plans weren't followed by the sub. and half of the math work is not done. I was not happy and was apprehensive about how the day would go. My first block of 7th graders was OK; however, my 7th/8th graders were annoying. The afternoon, after lunch got better.
I agree to discuss rearranging our class groups with José and plan portfolios after school. Planning for science and math portfolios begins in earnest, as well as, real Action Research.
Dr. Chispa has placed a fire under my rear by sending me a terse email. I get the message: No more screwing around and procrastinating. This is difficult and I return home unhappy with my career and performance in my Masters program. My wife calms me down in the evening with a walk on the beach. So...Here I am. Finally writing about the action research.
